Rated power of a wind turbine may not be quite as meaningless as cut-in wind speed, though its use is limited. It could have some utility to quickly compare, or get a feel for, the size of the wind turbine, but only if those rated power numbers were taken at the same rated wind speed, and if the manufacturer is giving you a realistic number (many inflate rated power). A much better measure of turbine size is, simply, their diameter. As shown above it is by far the best predictor for power output.
You bum….I was just getting my data together to send to you! Very nice write-up! My wife and I did a DIY ground mount array of 6.875kW for $12k pre-tax credit. We put it on the ground because our roof is 10yrs old. Using the PVWatts website our production (thus far) is beating expectations. It was relatively easy to install, with the ground supports and their concrete being the worst part. My wife is an architect so for ‘obvious’ reasons it had to be located 200′ from the house adding some more challenges. Like when I cut the water lines with the trencher. Ooops….The local power company was helpful but dubious of ability. In the end, we saved at least $20,000 off of the local installers price and gained a ton of knowledge. Using discounted cash flow analysis our return is going to beat 11% in 10 years if electricity prices stay the same. If they go up, we make more money! In the two months since we got it up an running our electricity price has gone up.

I just installed 2.55kw system. This is a bunch of boloney. The key is finding a Chinese distributor and buying good inverters the solar warehouse is trying to move for new inventory. Theres a lot of good stuff out there installers buy up and you can too if you know where to go. The cost of the panels, racking, 5kw inverter with one mppt, and wire was ~4700 dollars. I have to buy emt conduit and bender. The permit costs almost 500 here in cali. So all in all spent less than 6 grand and plan to claim the tax credit next year. There was no incentive from PG&E. Oh I put up a new meter, subpanel, riser too with ground rods.. But that had to be done anyhow- 1950s home with zinsco panel and no disconnect- I dunno how the place didnt burn down.. Bonded to the plumbing.. You can diy and save, just a lot of people in diy are more crazy than anything and do things that could burnt thier house down! If you dont understand electricity dont do it. DC is a little different and having a positively grounded inverter is nice too. You wont lose much efficiency. Getting well over 2.3kw on a good day. Code is another thing. The Hurricane white Lightning uses thicker winding which allows a higher level of current to pass to the grid tie or battery bank. This allows the generator to run both coolers and allow more amperage to pass which makes more wattage and has less resistance pass through the windings. We use the proprietary boost buck smart MPPT controller to maximize power output under all conditions. If you were able to follow the discussion essentially we have removed part of the balancing act. We are no longer limited having to use finer wire in windings to reach cut in points. We have less heating in the generators. Greater control over the turbines and finally more power output over time than anything in it’s class. We use our controller to get charging power out of turbines that other machines with lighter winding cannot. Our controller takes it another step further. The controller calculated the RPM of the generator based on the pulses of 3 phase power which flows through. The controller adjusts the resistance accordingly which takes a charge from the controller without applying to much resistance and killing the inertia of the blade set.
Wind turbines need wind. Not just any wind, but the nicely flowing, smooth, laminar kind. That cannot be found at 30 feet height. It can usually not be found at 60 feet. Sometimes you find it at 80 feet. More often than not it takes 100 feet of tower to get there. Those towers cost as much or more, installed, as the turbine itself. How much tower you need for a wind turbine to live up to its potential depends on your particular site; on the trees and structures around it etc. Close to the ground the wind is turbulent, and makes a poor fuel for a small wind turbine.
