Even in my neighborhood in a small town, where once nice homes are now rentals, I have noticed by flying kites that there are very specific 'wind tunnels' in my back yard, on the side of my house (between properties) and around the corners of my house. I think putting vertical spiraled panels at each corner of my house from ground to roof, along with a horizontal turbine in the middle of my backyard between the trees where there is a permanent opening would provide alot of wind power. I also think each each person needs to start testing the winds that belong to their house every month of the year with kites: big ones, little ones, heavy and light ones. If you have kids, dogs, or especially Kitty cats, you will have a blast doing your "wind study". I sure did. I had a yard full of cats grabbing kite tails and running off with them! I found optimal wind lift at 15 feet in some areas. It has alot to do with the building that has taken place around you, and the very specific currents produced from that design. It's likje your very own wind footprint.
There are good incentives for the sale of excess electricity or for the purchase of wind turbines. Federal regulations (specifically, the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978, or PURPA) require utilities to connect with and purchase power from small wind energy systems. However, you should contact your utility before connecting to its distribution lines to address any power quality and safety concerns.
When you look at the solar cell, make sure you check voltage between the positive side (the back side which is usually grey) and the negative side (which is the black side, with all the lines on it) of each cell. You can simply use a multimeter by placing its leads on the cell itself. This step is crucial, otherwise you'll connect bad cells in the middle of your link, causing the whole panel not to work.
Varied wind resources can exist within the same property. In addition to measuring or finding the annual wind speeds, you need to know about the prevailing directions of the wind at your site. Knowing the prevailing wind direction(s) is essential to determining the impact of obstacles and landforms when seeking the best available site location and estimating the wind resource at that location. To help with this process, small wind site assessors typically develop a wind rose, which shows the wind direction distributions of a given area. The wind rose divides a compass into sectors (usually 8 or 16) and indicates the average wind speed, average percentage of time that the wind blows from each direction, and/or the percentage of energy in the wind by sector. Wind roses can be generated based on annual average wind speeds, or by season, month, or even time of day as needed.[30]

It ‘d be good if each American homeowner could buy and install his own little household power plant, setting himself free from the grid. But the physics of wind power just does not work that way. Geography, topography, climate, and housing density allow well over 90% of American homeowners to buy wind turbines just barely big enough to power their blenders or waffle irons-nothing more. For most American homes, a single small wind generator has approximately the same value as a yard gnome.
The tables above are for HAWTs, the regular horizontal “wind mill” type we are all familiar with. For VAWTs the tables can be used as well, but you have to convert their dimensions. Calculate the frontal area (swept area) of the VAWT by multiplying height and width, or for a curved egg-beater approximate the area. Now convert the surface area to a diameter, as if it were a circle: Diameter = √(4 • Area / Pi). That will give you a diameter for the table. Look up the energy production for that diameter and your average annual wind speed and do the following:
Ensure the whole set-up matches. If you choose a 12V wind turbine then make sure you also choose a 12V inverter and controller to match it. Likewise, if you choose a 24V or 48V system make sure they are all the same voltage. The dump load must be exactly the same as the power rating of the turbine too. If you have 400W rated turbine, then the dump load must match it.
Mind you, in the upper Midwest, it won't produce near the power it did in the southern desert. It produces 5-6 Amps in "full sunlight" which means no clouds, no trees, no buildings. Low angle sun in the north doesn't deliver near the illumination that high angle southern desert sun does. This is why solar doesn't pay back in Detroit, Chicago or Minneapolis. Not enough sun.

GoGreenSolar: A solar provider since 2006, GoGreenSolar offers products, design services, and installations. The site offers a wide selection of solar panel kits and products. They claim to offer a robust complement of installation and troubleshooting services but I’m not sure how much service this gives you in terms of design. They offer some very cheap solar kits using brands that I have never heard of but if I was going to consider buying a kit from them I would decide what brand of solar panels and inverter I wanted before I spoke to them. I would not buy their cheapest kits as these contain brands I don’t trust.

Creating a solar panel out of broken re-used solar cell pieces. I ordered a pack of these from http://siliconsolar.com (3$ for a bagful of them - you can order here). In addition, you will need some conductive copper mesh (available at most art stores), glue gun + sticks, a multimeter and a conductive pen (or any sort of conductive brush-on - I got my conductive silver pen here). In this tutorial I will try to explain the best technique I found to connect these broken cells, in order to create your own CHEAP solar panel.
I was researching this recently, seems like such a good idea. From what I understand – still in test and a year or two out. They are trying to make out it will cost not much more than a regular (well a tile) roof. They have two types of identical looking tiles, one that produces electricity and one that doesnt (thinking being that entire roof (particularly the N facing) will not be photo-voltaic). Cost per square depends on the mixture of the 2 tiles but it looked to me to be in the $50 –

Beaufort scale—A scale of wind forces, described by name and range of velocity, and classified from force 0 to 12, with an extension to 17. The initial (1805) Francis Beaufort wind force scale of 13 classes (0 to 12) did not reference wind speed numbers but related qualitative wind conditions to effects on the sails of a frigate, then the main ship of the Royal Navy, from "just sufficient to give steerage" to "that which no canvas sails could withstand." Although the Beaufort scale has little use in site assessments, a system of tree flagging observations has been used to estimate prevailing wind directions and levels on the scale over time.
